About

Bedford Hardware has always been a family-owned business. In its 110+ year history, our building has had only 3 owners, beginning as Burks-Ramsey Supply in the late 1800’s; then becoming Bedford Hardware when bought by the Graves brothers in the late 1940’s; and since 2000 owned by Bill Mosley and Elizabeth Berry-Mosley, and managed by their son Jon. Across those three centuries everything from buggy whips and plow parts to Philco televisions to cordless drills have passed through these doors.

But let's get it out of the way up front...there are a lot of things we don't have in stock...things like lumber, well pumps, overalls, appliances, curtains. Some we can get quickly and easily (our catalogs display well over 100,000 items)...some we can't. But if what you need is basic fix-it, prettify-it, or identify-it, chances are good we can help.

So what do we stock? Well, here are just a few areas we concentrate on:

  • We have a lot of plumbing, both to install and to repair.

  • We're really big on painting and decorating - best in town...Pittsburgh Paints;   Sikkens Stains and Sealers;window shades, shutters and coverings, etc.

  • We do a lot with doors and windows, storms and screens...repair, replacement, fabrication, scratch-n-dent, you name it.

  • Housewares and kitchenwares are big - Lodge, Bayou Classic and Cuisinart; lightbulbs, knobs, and cleaning and polishing agents.

  • Giftware, cast iron and brass, and toys, especially Radio Flyer, are all favorites.

  • Electrical and Heating and Air we do at the basic level. Wood stoves and stove pipe are more our style.

But in fact, if we have a true specialty here at Bedford Hardware, it’s for renovating and restoring the buildings and homes that make up our collective history. We’re passionate about helping our customers understand how to repair those things that, with a little TLC have many useful years of service left, be it plumbing fixtures, wood windows or garden tools.

While the “Big Box” stores may carry vastly more merchandise than we'd ever want to, what they could never have are our old wood floors. Their creaks and groans  tell the history of this part of Virginia... stop buy and we'll translate a few of their stories for you.
